Culvert Replacement: Restoring a Safe Residential Driveway Entrance

Introduction

The culvert under a residential driveway had collapsed, taking the stability of the entrance with it. Once a culvert fails, the surface above it starts to move, and what looks like a small dip quickly becomes an unsafe access. The client needed the entrance restored without losing the existing paved driveway in the process, which shaped the whole approach to the work.

1. Precise Cut in the Existing Asphalt

The first step was a precise cut in the existing asphalt, so we could open up the work zone over the failed culvert while preserving as much of the paved entrance as possible. A clean saw cut also gives us a straight, controlled edge to re-pave against later, which keeps the final repair looking like a deliberate patch instead of a scar.

2. Excavation & Removal of the Damaged Culvert

Inside the cut, the damaged culvert was excavated and removed. Working in a tight residential entrance means careful spoil management and constant attention to the surrounding driveway and landscaping. With the old pipe out, we could assess the trench, correct the bedding profile, and prepare a stable seat for the new culvert.

3. New Culvert, Stone & Compaction

A new culvert was installed and then surrounded and topped with stone, placed and compacted in lifts to lock everything in. Proper compaction around a culvert is what keeps the driveway above it from settling under repeated vehicle loads, so this step gets the same attention as the pipe itself.

Conclusion

With the saw-cut edges trimmed back in, the new culvert in place, and the surrounding material properly compacted, the entrance is once again safe, stable and ready to take everyday traffic. A. Préfontaine & Associés handled the replacement as a small civil engineering project in miniature, exactly the way a driveway culvert should be treated if you want it to last.
